Procrastination and me

Procrastination and me

It’s amazing how fast a week can fly by when a deadline is approaching.

This time last week I was sat down, pens neatly arranged in a line, my books piled in ascending order based on the number of pages in them, my emails were up to date and most importantly I had moved all the coins in my savings into piles based on denomination. Read the rest of this entry »

Child development – its essay time

Child development – its essay time

The majority of my blog posts so far seem to be a made up of a mix of apologetic excuses or bouts of frustration. Well, you’ll be pleased to know that this one is no different.

February 4th was the start date for my latest OU course – child development – which is not one that I have been looking forward to. Not because it’s not that interesting, but more that I have very little interest in children. But, the more I read, the more I realise that I don’t have to. Read the rest of this entry »

Back.. but not quite with any degree of vengeance

The more astute amongst you may have noticed that this blog hasn’t been updated for a while. It seems every blog post I write starts with an apology for leaving it so long. Well, from the last time we spoke, everything hasn’t quite gone to plan. Read the rest of this entry »

Paranormal activity and popcorn

Paranormal activity and popcorn

It’s been over a week since I last posted, the idea of posting on a regular basis is proving more troublesome than I thought. Not just because I’m really busy at the moment, but now I have switched from reading for fun to more academic books, I’m currenlty reading Critical thinking skills , the going is a little slower to say the least. My first visit to @Manchestersalon…..painless

My first visit to @Manchestersalon…..painless

On Wednesday night (28th September) I went along to The Manchester Salon (in association with Cafe Scientifique), a public discussion forum at The International Anthony Burgess Foundation in Manchester.

I have to admit to feeling a little nervous on the way there, this was to be my first discussion/debating experience since starting my degree. My radio background has meant I have had to interview those in positions of responsibility, and I have never shied away from asking difficult questions and tackling issues head on. But this felt different. Read the rest of this entry »

Barcelona, a break and blogging

It’s been over a week since my last blog post so I thought I would do a quick update on what I have been doing. It’s involved a week in Barcelona, a break from psychology and some thought about what I would lke to do with this blog. Read the rest of this entry »

Well I’m convinced – Sex at Dawn by @ChrisRyanPhD and C Jetha

Well I’m convinced – Sex at Dawn by @ChrisRyanPhD and C Jetha

It’s been a long time since I have had a book which I couldn’t put down. Guess what, I found one.

Sex at Dawn by Chris Ryan and Cacilda Jetha is one of the most fascinating and thought-provoking books I have ever come across. The “headline” on the front cover states that this book will tell you “how we mate, why we stray, and what it means for modern relationships”.

Let’s start with why I actually purchased this book. Read the rest of this entry »

Too tired to read a book???

The last week at work has been a draining one. I am managing quite a large project at the moment which is taking a lot of energy and long hours.

As much as I have wanted to come home and continue reading psychology books, the motivation just hasn’t been there. Since my last post on Tuesday I have read a couple more chapters of Sex at Dawn (mainly thanks to a couple of train journeys) and I am still enjoying the book but for the last couple of days it’s stayed on the bedside table. Next off the psychology bookshelf

Next off the psychology bookshelf

With my first non-course related psychology book under my belt, I thought I should start another. I have two other child psychology books to make a start on, but for some reason I am not feeling too motivated about child psychology at the moment.

Over the last couple of weeks I have purchased a couple of new books which I was going to leave until I go on holiday in the next few months. But why wait? maybe reading a more interesting book may stoke the child psych fire. Read the rest of this entry »

Can you be passionate about psychology, without sounding geeky?

Can you be passionate about psychology, without sounding geeky?

I was at work yesterday when the topic of a certain anti-Islamic group’s upcoming protest came up. The group I was with, started discussing how you could counter people’s opinions whether racist, anti-religious or just plain distasteful. Funnily enough, I had an example which I read in a recent book. Read the rest of this entry »
