Barcelona, a break and blogging

25 Sep

It’s been over a week since my last blog post so I thought I would do a quick update on what I have been doing. It’s involved a week in Barcelona, a break from psychology and some thought about what I would lke to do with this blog.

First, I am just back from a week in Barcelona. After working long hours for the last six months, a break was a much-needed relief. We stayed in an apartment in the Rocafort area of the city and got to see most of the sights. My favourite part of the trip was a day out to Figueres to visit the Salvador Dali Museum, especially as we carried on to Cadaqués for lunch. I did take a couple of books with me, as well as the latest edition of Psychology Today, none of which I found time to actually read. I have to be honest; taking a break from thinking about psychology was a relief as well.

The other reason is work. For those who don’t know me, I’m a media trainer and am going though a particularly busy period with a project I am running which comes to an end in March.

Anyway, excuses aside, it’s time to get back to trying to learn more. After having finished Sex at Dawn, I have moved onto my next book (Paranormality by Professor Richard Wiseman). So far an engaging book but more on that when I have finished.

I have spent the last couple of days trying to catch up on twitter. It’s great following a number of practicing psychologists and bloggers sharing the research and findings which interest them, I have no idea how anyone picks the area they want to specialise in, most areas of psychology interest me and whenever anyone asks me what I would like to do once I qualify (I keep correcting them with an ‘if I qualify’) I tell them I have no idea.

After completing D171 An introduction to counselling, I thought counselling seemed like a direction to go in. After DSE212 Exploring psychology I was more interesting in behaviorism. After reading Sex at Dawn, I have a huge interest in evolutionary psychology, it’s ever changing. Only yesterday I read an article about how humour therapy could help dementia, could working with mental health be on the cards?

Is this just me, does everyone else know exactly where they’re heading. Maybe it will just happen, only time will tell. Anyway, I have developed a cunning plan, as cunning as a fox what used to be Professor of Cunning at Oxford University but has moved on and is now working for the U.N. at the High Commission of International Cunning……I’m sorry, I digress.

What I intend to do is update this blog once a week, in addition to normal posts, with a number of stories and studies which have interested me. It is a bit of a personal tally chart as to which areas I enjoy more, but you may also find some of the stories interesting. This will hopefully start later this week.

In the meantime, I am going to get back to this book, and then get a little more academic with a few books on critical analysis and essay writing (I know, the joy).

Finally a quick note to thank everyone who is reading what I write, I did start this as a personal motivator but it’s nice to know that someone is paying attention and cares. As I write, I have had 528 visits, not bad for a four-week old blog 🙂

Too bad you didn’t drop us a line. We could have had a drink in Barcelona (where we live). Glad you enjoyed your visit, anyway. After your lovely review of Sex at Dawn, we owe you a beer!

Thanks for the kind offer, the same applies if you’re ever in Lancashire (not so glamorous) 🙂
